Dr. Esen K. Akpek

About Dr. Akpek: 

Dr. Akpek is Professor of Ophthalmology at Duke University, Director of the Frances and C. Stephen Foster Center for Ocular Immunology and Inflammation, and Chief for the Division of Ocular Immunology, established in July 2025.

She is a globally recognized authority in advanced corneal transplantation, stem cell transplantation, and ocular surface reconstruction. Before joining Duke, she held the Bendann Professorship in Ophthalmology and Rheumatology at the Wilmer Eye Institute at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, where she also served as Director of the Ocular Surface Disease and Dry Eye Clinic and Associate Director of the Jerome L. Greene Sjögren’s Center.

A respected leader, researcher, and educator, Dr. Akpek has authored more than 250 peer-reviewed publications and has contributed to numerous international initiatives advancing the diagnosis and treatment of dry eye and ocular surface disease. Her contributions have been recognized with honors including the Cora Verhagen Immunology Prize, a Research to Prevent Blindness scholarship, and recognition from the American Academy of Ophthalmology.
